Where the Wild Things Are
USA | 2009 | 101 MINS
from Maurice Sendak’s story, adapted by Dave Eggers and directed by Spike Jonze
starring Max Records, Catherine Keener & Mark Ruffalo
Maurice Sendak’s nine sentence, twenty page picture book had terrible reviews when it first appeared in 1963. It is now a much loved children’s classic about a small boy, Max, who sails away to the land of the Wild Things. It wasn’t much to work with when trying to create a feature film, but Jonze welcomed the challenge. Working with gifted writer Eggers - best known for A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and What Is the What - and Sendak they created a film about a modern day Max.
Sendak describes it as “a [that] has an entirely emotional, spiritual and visual life which is as valid as the book… but in a more modern and fantastical way.”
