We were sad to learn that Helen Best – a hugely influential figure in the Art Centre’s early life – has passed away.
Helen became Secretary of then then named Arts Society in 1983, taking over from founder Peggy Chapman-Andrews, who also passed away recently. One her main aims was to progress the building programme, which saw the opening of what is now the cafe and kitchen and later, the joining together of the two separate buildings which now form the Arts Centre.
“We wouldn’t have started the Arts Centre without Peggy, but it wouldn’t have become what it is without Helen. She helped transform the Arts Centre – personally carrying barrow-loads of rubble during the early refurbishment to ensure that companies such as Ballet Central could come.”
Sandra Brown, Founder Member and former Chair of the Arts Centre
The Arts Centre is planning a celebration of the contributions made by both Peggy and Helen to the story of the Arts Centre which will take place in the summer. More details to be announced.
