FPTS – The Personal History of David Copperfield (PG)

Online2020, UK, 119 mins

Based on the novel by Charles Dickens, screenplay by Simon Blackwell and Armando Iannucci, directed by Armando Iannucci

Fresh, playful and boldly optimistic take on the perennial Dickens classic. Beloved characters are brought to life by an all-star cast including Dev Patel (David Copperfield), Tilda Swinton (Betsey Trotwood), Hugh Laurie (Mr Dick), Peter Capaldi (Mr Micawber) and Ben Whishaw (Uriah Heep). David Copperfield is often regarded as an autobiographical novel, “a very complicated weaving of truth and invention”, with events following Dickens’s own life. Of the books he wrote, it was said to be his favourite. We hope that he would also have embraced this delightful re-imagining.

“An exuberantly optimistic film celebrating the life force of art and eccentricity. Who couldn’t use a little of that right now?” Associated Press

“A boisterous hymn to the creative impulse.” Roger
