James Norton and Daniel Lamont are superb in this heartfelt drama about a single father determined to do the best by his son before he dies.
3-year-old Michael lives with his father John, a 35-year-old window cleaner currently diagnosed with terminal cancer. John cannot face telling his son the truth, so against the advice of the adoption agency he’s working with, takes him on visits to prospective families, pretending to be visiting new friends. John is torn between Michael being able to start a new life, or leaving him with the tools that would allow him to know the father he had, in later life.
Writer-director Uberto Pasolini draws from a well of understatement with this snapshot of two lives that cover the full arc of John’s journey. Without resorting to sentimentality, the film succeeds in being deeply affecting. Norton and Lamont’s affection for each other on screen is utterly convincing.
