‘We are fortunate to live in a small, but extremely varied landscape; even more fortunate that nowhere is more than a few hours from the coast.’
As a painter, Evelyn Bartlett uses reference photographs and is always attracted to scenes of high contrast, especially near- silhouette situations. The way she works, with no washes or blended colour, demands delineation and lots of decision-making as to what to leave out. Landscapes and seascapes with dramatic profiles and striking colours are therefore central to her artistic taste. This exhibition largely features Dorset and Devon, two counties that mean both ‘home’ and ‘holiday’ to the artist.
