The Golden Spurtle
Enter the world of competitive porridge-making for one of the most truly delightful films of the year.
For the past 3 decades, the Scottish Highlands village of Carrbridge (population c700) has been home to the annual Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship. But after this year’s event, unflappable Charlie Miller, long-time head of the Porridge Committee, will be hanging up his spurtle forever.
Charlie is just one of the many characters who make this documentary such a joy to watch. They include a porridge hipster who is armed with his grandmother’s stirring secrets; a health company CEO with radical ideas about the proportion of pinhead to normal oats and we hear with horror of the year someone “dangerous” and “crazy” brought a deep fat fryer to the competition!
Like a real-life Ealing-style comedy, The Golden Spurtle bubbles with warmth and humour as our competitors prove that there is far more to porridge-making than simply combining oatmeal, water and salt.

Charming... This film is a pleasure to watch – with endearing salt-of-the-earth subjects, a lovely ebb and flow, and a tone that feels just right.
A deftly-constructed crowd-pleaser.
