One Day Festival of Music on Film: The Last Waltz
The Band’s farewell concert with guests including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison.
It’s very hard to pinpoint what makes Martin Scorsese’s capturing of The Band’s 1976 farewell concert at the Winterland Ballroom, San Francisco, so extraordinary, but manifestly it is just that. Perhaps, it’s because it feels like everyone on the stage is there to celebrate not only The Band, but the joy of making of music itself? Or because everyone behind the camera clearly also shares that joy? Anyway, it works. Memorable magic happens.

Probably the greatest of concert films.
No American movie this year has been as full of the “joy of making cinema” as Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz.
