One Day Festival of Music on Film: Summer of Soul

Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly and the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson…

More than forty hours of incredible footage from the 1969 Harlem Cultural festival sat in a basement for 50 years as this ground-breaking music event, not to say watershed historical moment, gradually faded from popular consciousness. Director Questlove’s film not only rediscovers some of the best of the musician’s performances, but also employs interviews with attendees, musicians and other commentators to provide rich and moving social context.

Rotten Tomatoes  99% critics score.

USA 2021. Director Questlove. 117 mins. 12

An absolute joy, uncovering a treasure trove of pulse-racing, heart-stopping live music footage... that has remained largely unseen for half a century.
