Kate Griffin & Matchume Zango
Kate Griffin (UK) and Matchume Zango (Mozambique) fuse banjo and timbila in a bold, contemporary celebration of global tradition
An acclaimed timbila player from Zavala, the heartland of Mozambique’s timbila tradition, Zango works internationally across performance, theatre and film. Griffin, an internationally touring clawhammer banjo player with Indo-folk collective Mishra, has been described by Dan Walsh as “one of the top banjo players in the country.”
They met during the 2020 Making Tracks residency, later recording together in Maputo and debuting their live show on a UK tour in July 2024, blending timbila, mbira and percussion with banjo, guitar and low whistle.
This show features Ford Collier (Mishra, The Drystones) on low whistle and guitar.
