Liam Ó Maonlaí and Martin Brunsden Acoustic Set

Taking time out from an extensive full band tour of England during November, Hothouse Flowers frontman Liam Ó Maonlaí and double bassist Martin Brunsden will visit the Bridport Arts Centre for an intimate, stripped back evening of songs and improvisation.

No two shows are alike and there is never a setlist… more a striving in the present moment, a searching and a dreaming. Traditional music, soul, jazz and silence combine to create something both ancient and new. A harking back and a looking forward. Drawing on many years of friendship, travel and multicultural respect, Liam and Martin invite you to join them as they walk towards the beauty once again.

Liam Ó Maonlaí

Born in Dublin in 1964 Liam was given music by his mother and father through the traditional songs of his native country .

His teenage years were given to exploring the music of his generation as well as being inspired by the music of Eastern Europe and India .

A concert by Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock exposed him to new possibilities on piano.

He has played with musicians from the Grand Canyon (hava supai) Mali, Yolngu country, Basque country, West Papua , Lakota , Greece among many others.

“My passion is how we recognise each other through the frequencies we produce with music.”

He continues to tour with his band Hothouse Flowers .

Martin Brunsden

Martin’s musical journey began in Australia, living alongside Indigenous peoples.

He has since played all over the world with a host of musicians, theatre companies, artists, sculptors, holy men and women and a vast herd of children.

He has been a part of the Irish music scene for almost four decades and has been playing with Liam and Hothouse Flowers for much of this time.

“Music is a carrier wave for our intentions – so the game is to get clear on why you are doing it and then get out of the way”

Martin is also currently working on Portland, where he is creating a body of musical work using only English stone.
