Amadeus

Miloš Forman’s multi-Academy Award-winning film is a thrilling cinematic experience with music, images and characters that that are impossible to forget.

Tortured with jealousy at the young Mozart’s genius, court composer Salieri (F Murray Abraham) transforms into one of cinema’s most compelling villains as he hatches a diabolical plan to drive his rival to death.

Filmed on location in Prague and with Mozart’s music expertly performed by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, this is an immersive plunge into late 18th century music and intrigue.

Even greater than Peter Schaffer’s acclaimed play, the film is realised in wholly cinematic terms, especially in the use of Mozart’s music. Mozart’s mother-in-law transforms into The Magic Flute’s Queen of the Night while the rain-drenched, satin-sodden mourners of a funeral procession are brilliantly choreographed to his Requiem.

USA 1984. Director Miloš Forman. With F Murray Abraham, Tom Hulce, Elizabeth Berridge, Simon Callow. 160 mins. PG

Miloš Forman’s extraordinarily sumptuous, witty, dark, moving and majestic movie... magnificent and ornate.
