A very funny and deeply poignant portrait of Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart – played by an Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated Ethan Hawke with campy genius and a shocking combover!
Once half of the musical duo who gave us ‘The Lady is a Tramp’, ‘My Funny Valentine’ and of course ‘Blue Moon’, Hart is not happy. He’s drowning his sorrows in a Manhattan bar as former partner, composer Richard Rodgers’ new musical, Oklahoma!, enjoys a rapturous opening night.
Bisexual Hart is given joyously waspish lines, and he’s not above referring to his frenemy’s new hit as ‘Oklahomo’. The film is rooted in rich characterisation with wonderful interplay between Hawke and a restrained Andrew Scott as Rodgers, and Margaret Qualley as an unattainable young Yale student with whom he becomes besotted.
This is another great chapter in the partnership of Hawke and director Richard Linklater that started with Before Sunrise.
