Brother (15)

Tickets: £6 Adult, £5 concs, £4 Film Society members

The utterly stunning, cinematic spectacle that is Brother by Clement Virgo (The Wire, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story).

Adapted from David Chariandy’s award-winning novel of the same name, Brother is propelled by the pulsing beats of Toronto’s early hip hop scene following the story of Francis (Lamar Johnson) and Michael (Aaron Pierre), sons of Caribbean immigrants maturing into young men.

A mystery unfolds during the sweltering summer of 1991, and escalating tensions set off a series of events that change the course of these brothers’ lives forever. Brother crafts a timely story about the profound bond between siblings, the resilience of community and the irrepressible power of music.

"such gracefulness to the filmmaking here, cutting back and forth across time, building like a thriller...but never losing sight of its characters"

Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com

"An emotionally resonant film that presents Scarborough in a poetically beautiful and gritty light unlike it has ever been captured on screen before, Brother is a marvel to behold."

Courtney Small, That Shelf

"A world is revealed, brilliantly."

Peter Howell, Toronto Star

"The lives of two brothers, taking in timelines which span several decades and a devastating death, are threaded together in this supremely confident and affecting drama from Canadian director Clement Virgo."

Wendy Ide, Screen International
