Hugh Dunford Wood | A Retrospective

Hugh created a visual feast in his home in Lyme Regis (and in recent years Bridport). Friends who visited were always struck by it, down to cushions designed for vibrant sofas and hand-produced plates used at every meal.

Local artist-designer Hugh Dunford Wood (1949 – 2025) had a prolific career. Moving fluidly between colour-drenched landscapes and portraits, textiles and ceramics, extravagant wallpapers, and the occasional sculpture or film, he was led by an unmistakable eye for colour and design. and Edward Bawden; residencies at the Royal

Shakespeare Company and Shakespeare’s Globe; his role as co-founder of Britain’s first Open Studios Week; and the ethical, humanitarian conviction that quietly runs through so much of his work.

This exhibition offers a rich sampling of his restless creativity, while tracing the threads that shaped it: an early friendship with Peggy Angus, which placed him within the orbit of Eric Ravilious
