I’m No Angel (1933)(A)

“When I’m good I’m very good. But when I’m bad, I’m better.” – Tira (Mae West)

Seductive and emotionally guarded Tira (Mae West) is the much-adored circus performer whose newest suitor is married New York City socialite Kirk. Kirk’s cousin (Cary Grant) tries to convince Tira to end the affair. After falling for one another, love and happiness risk taking her from the stage, and her boss plots to break off the engagement and shackle her to the circus forever.

By the early 1930s Mae West was one of America’s most successful stars of stage and screen – and I’m No Angel was her biggest box office hit. But she was also a very successful writer. Her 1926 play ‘Sex’ was a popular hit, but considered so risqué that she was charged with obscenity and spent 8 days in jail! And her script for I’M NO ANGEL is packed with saucy one-liners that audiences lapped up. The following year, the censorious Hays Code would put an end to any implications of sex in the movies!

Dir. Wesley Ruggles, USA 1933, 87 mins. With Mae West, Cary Grant, Edward Arnold.
