A short story is like a good mini break. It introduces you to new people and places where every second counts. It should also leave you wanting more! Discover how to make the most of character, plot, structure and conflict from short story writers, prize winners and published authors who appreciate every step of this journey.

Featuring 

Sean Lusk

Sean is an award-winning short story writer and winner of numerous prizes including The Bridport Prize. Sean’s debut novel The Second Sight of Zachary Cloudesley featured on BBC 2’s Between the Covers with Sarah Cox, was shortlisted for the Scottish National Book awards debut of the year and longlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for historical fiction. Sean’s second novel is published in July 2024.

Elaine Chiew 

Elaine’s short story collection, The Heartsick Diaspora received coverage in The GuardianThe Singapore Straits TimesBookRiot, and Esquire Singapore. She is a twice winner of the Bridport Short Story Prize, and has been anthologised in the US, Asia, and UK, such as The Best Asian Short Stories and recently, broadcasted on BBC Radio 4. Her first full-length novel, The Light Between Us, was published in May 2024.

Ben Hinshaw

Ben’s stories have appeared in The Best Short Stories 2021: The O’ Henry Prize WinnersHarvard ReviewGrantaThe White Review, and elsewhere. His debut novel Exactly What You Mean featured on BBC Two’s Between the Covers. Ben is a former Bridport Prize winner. Ben grew up on the island of Guernsey and has lived in Northern California. He is a former bookseller.
