Mildred Pierce

An Academy Award-winning Joan Crawford stars as a mother and businesswoman in the great noir thriller-meets-melodrama.

From the opening gun shots and the uttering of ‘Mildred’ on a dying man’s lips, Mildred Pierce doesn’t let you out of its brilliant grip for a moment. Charting the rise of a single mother as she builds a career from scratch to support her children, Mildred’s entrepreneurial success is counterpointed by the mistakes and pain of her personal life.

Swiveling on a dime between genres, whether the film is a murder mystery or the tale of a poisoned mother-daughter relationship, it’s always about two things: money and class. Casablanca might be director Curtiz’s best-known film, but Mildred Pierce is his masterpiece.

USA 1945. Director Michael Curtiz. With Joan Crawford, Jack Carson, Zachary Scott, Eve Arden, Ann Blyth. 111 mins. PG

This is one of 6 films showing at BAC as part of Too Much: Melodrama on Film, a season organised by the BFI and the Film Audience Network. The season will be screening at cinemas across the UK during autumn 2025.
