Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)(15)

At this year’s From Page to Screen Festival, screenwriter Chris Chibnall selected his ‘Desert Island Scripts‘; a collection of films and screenplays that have influenced and inspired his work and career. This autumn, we invite you to discover these remarkable films in a special screening season inspired by Chris’s choices, celebrating great storytelling and the enduring power of screenwriting on the big, and small, screen.

“To make a great film you need three things – the script, the script and the script” – Alfred Hitchcock

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

On a remote island off the coast of Brittany, desire and defiance quietly take root. In late 18th-century France, gifted painter Marianne is commissioned to create a wedding portrait of Héloïse – without Héloïse ever knowing she’s being painted. Posing as a companion, Marianne studies her subject by day and paints her in secret by night. But as the days pass, observation turns into connection, and connection into something far more powerful.

A visually stunning and emotionally charged story of love, art, and the cost of independence.

France 2019. Director: Céline Sciamma. With Noémie Merlant, Adèle Haenel and Luana Bajrami. 121mins. 15.
