The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974) (PG)

SCREENING AS PART OF FROM PAGE TO SCREEN FILM FESTIVAL

Tickets: Adult £6 | Cons & U25’s £5

Chosen by guest curator Rebecca Lenkiewicz: “I saw this Herzog classic when I was quite young, maybe thirteen? And it had such a profound effect on me in terms of a story about humanity and kindness and random cruelty. Perhaps I took in the sublime film making…

the dream sequences always stayed with me as did Kaspar’s profound logic and hope.  It’s such a resonant film in terms of human creatures and how do we survive the world?  Werner Herzog has such a huge heart as well as brilliance and epic imagination and I feel it strongly in this film. It’s just wonderful.”

Herzog’s phenomenal film is based on the mysterious story of a youth who appeared out of nowhere in 1828, holding a letter but scarcely able to speak or walk. Bruno S, a busker with no acting experience, delivers an astonishing performance as the released captive who naively seeks acceptance within a hostile society. We will be screen a new print re-issued for the film’s 50th Anniversary.

This film is subtitled.
