Vermiglio
Set during WW2, this hauntingly beautiful tale of a family torn apart is set against the stunning backdrop of a remote mountain village in the Italian Alps.
It’s 1944. Pietro, a young Sicilian soldier, carries his injured comrade back to his mountain home. Hailed as a hero, he quickly catches the eye of the daughter of the village schoolteacher. But their relationship sets off a series of events that shake the village, uncapping age-old misogyny and intolerance with devastating results.
This is a slow-burn drama of great subtlety and quiet observation. Director Delpero uses her painterly eye to uncover real depth in the details of the everyday and charges her portrayal of rural lives with an intensity reminiscent of the novels of Thomas Hardy.
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize, Venice Film Festival.
Italy/France/Belgium, 2024. Director Maura Delpero. With Tommaso Ragno, Giuseppe De Domenico, Roberta Rovelli, Martina Scrinzi. 119 mins. 15

Outstanding… Exquisite… It’s a remarkable work.
★★★★
Wonderfully acted with unaffected naturalism by its cast of professionals and newcomers and plays an extravagant, almost shameless pizzicato on the audience’s heartstrings.
Remarkable. A momentous vision.
A breathtaking drama.
